Great Grandfather Lewis Penny Doty
August 16, 1867 – April 25, 1942

Although born in Ulsterville, Ulster Co., New York, Lewis lived in Orange County, New York for the majority of his life. When he was a young teen, he resided in Mount Hope. He later made his home in Wawayanda, Wallkill and Middletown.

From the Middletown Times Herald, Monday, April 27, 1942

Lewis P. Doty, ninety-seven Railroad avenue, died Saturday afternoon at Horton Hospital.
Mr. Doty was born in Ulsterville August seventeenth, 1867, a son of Albert and Jane Bennett Doty.  He is survived by his wife, the former Emily Wight; and four children, Mabel, wife of Frank Regan of Waverly, Florence, wife of Fred Gardner, Harry B. and Frank L., all of Middletown; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; also a sister, May, wife of John Rancier of Dover, N. J., and nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held tomorrow at two p.m. at Hasbrouck's Chapel, with the Rev. Reginald T. Edwards officiating.  Interment will be in the family plot, Wallkill Cemetery, Phillipsburgh.  Friends may call this evening at the chapel.

Lewis P. Doty’s death certificate
Obtained from the New York State Dept. of Health
Albany, New York

I’m including a page from the Hasbrouck Funeral Home book for Lewis P. Doty because the death certificate and funeral home accounting differ slightly. His obituary and death certificate state Lewis Penny’s home was 97 Railroad Avenue in Middletown. Hasbrouck Funeral Home records indicate his home was 79 Railroad Ave. I don’t know which is correct. The cause of death on the certificate above is very difficult to interpret but the funeral home provides “acute blistered broncho pneumonia” as cause of death. The funeral home incorrectly notes Lewis’ birth date as April 17, 1867 rather than August 17, 1867.

Record from Hasbrouck Funeral Home
Middletown, New York

Lewis Penny rests beside his wife in the Doty family plot at Wallkill Cemetery, Phillipsburg, New York. My grandparents are also buried with them.

An earlier post about Lewis Penny’s marriage to Emily (Wight) Taylor was published Friday, March 21, 2014 titled LEWIS PENNY DOTY MARRIED MRS. EMILY TAYLOR

SOMETHING SWEET

Nellie’s Divinity Fudge

2 ½ cups sugar

½ cup of Karo Syrup (wht)

½ cup cold water

Boil the above until it spins a thread. Beat whites of 2 eggs stiff. When the above mixture spins a thread put ½ of it in with the egg and beat good. Then add the other half.

1 teaspoon vanilla

1 cup nut meats

Nellie’s recipe is an old candy recipe I found in my Aunt’s recipe book. Nellie Mae (Hewitt) Lee was my Aunt’s cousin.
